CNN Reports: AT&T's Latest Data Breach - Protecting Your Information
Article Source: Ramishah Maruf for CNN Business
In a recent CNN news article, it was reported that in 2022, AT&T experienced a data breach that affected "nearly all" of its cellular customers and customers of other wireless providers that used its network, between May 1, 2022, and October 31, 2022.
What was stolen?:
The breach exposed call metadata, including the phone numbers called and texted, the number of interactions, and call duration. This information could be used by hackers to make more convincing phishing attempts and scams.
While no personal information like names, addresses, or Social Security numbers were exposed, the breach poses a risk of increased targeted attacks.
What should I do?: AT&T customers are advised to be extra cautious about any suspicious phone calls or text messages, even if they appear to be from known contacts. It is always important to be hypersensitive to phone calls and text messages when asked to do things like call a number, click a link, or transfer money.
Always verify the authenticity of such requests by calling back the person or organization directly. Additionally, it is also important to stay informed about phishing and other scam attempts, especially as hackers become more sophisticated.
While experts say that major responsibility for such data breaches should lie with telecom companies and government regulations, individuals must also stay vigilant and do what they can to protect themselves.
